I no longer change my mind. I redecide.
Let me explain. In the English language, we often use the phrase change your mind whenever we are forming an opinion or making a choice about something that differs from the opinion or choice we held previously.
According to my Swedish coaching colleague, Anna Billman, “the Swedes use a term that translates to "change yourself"! Which feels even worse.” But she shared that the Norwegians prefer to use a term that literally translates to redecide. She continued, “…I immediately took the Norwegian "redecide" to heart when I heard it.”
And as a nerd for semantics, I just love that.
Let’s add this word to our vocabulary, shall we?
Redeciding vs Second-Guessing: What's the Difference?
Redeciding and second-guessing might seem like twins, but they're not. When you redecide, you're stepping up. You're proving you can adapt, learn, grow. You're ready to shift your beliefs or decisions when new insights hit. It's evolution in action.
Second-guessing, though? That's the monster of doubt, uncertainty, a lack of confidence. It traps you in a loop of overthinking, keeping you stuck and stifled. It ain’t pretty.
Bottom line: redeciding equals openness; second-guessing equals insecurity. No contest.
Embrace Redeciding
When you redecide, you're taking control. You're realizing that your current road might not be right for you anymore. Maybe there's a new path, a new you, waiting.
And that’s more than okay! It’s fantastic!
But if you’re like most of the people I know, redeciding can feel like admitting you were wrong. But let's cut through that noise right here and now: this is not about right or wrong. It's about being real. Real with yourself, your journey, your evolution.
Because when you made your initial decision, you were working from that set of facts. That set of circumstances. That amount of experience. And now? Now you are equipped with new information, or insight, or wisdom to draw from, which may inspire a reassessment, and perhaps, a new choice.
So, let's see redeciding for what it truly is: a sign of strength, growth, adaptability.
Next time you feel like something is not working, or you just don’t love it anymore (or both!), don't sweat it. Just redecide. It's your right. Celebrate that choice. Because it's those brave enough to redecide who shake up the world.
And you reserve the right to redecide.
You don’t need anyone’s approval or permission.
You don’t need an explanation of your decisions. Nor your redecisions.
You just need the courage to change, the will to grow, and the determination to be the best you.
Actually, the swedes use a term that translates to "change yourself"! Which feels even worse... (so I immediately took the norwegian "redecide" to heart when I heard it)
